Critical Thinking
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1-4pm PDT (6 sessions) Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1-4pm PDT (6 sessions) Critical Thinking According to the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking, “Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information.” It is the essential foundation upon which all debate formats and persuasive speech formats rest. In this class we will be focused on how to create and engage with arguments with clarity and precision. We will review the principles of logical analysis and learn how to objectively assess arguments’ inherent weaknesses and strengths. Philosophy & Values
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1-4pm PDT (6 sessions) Philosophy and Values How do we define the “just” and the “good”? What basic rights are citizens owed by their leaders? How can we evaluate the most ethical course of action? If questions like these excite you, then this is the right class for you! Values are most often used in Lincoln-Douglas debate, and this class is ideal for LD students looking to better understand how to build their case framework. However, students from all debate backgrounds will benefit from introduction to philosophy and how it can bolster their argumentation skills. Extemporaneous Speaking & Current Events - Level 1
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1-4pm PDT (6 sessions) Extemporaneous Speaking & Current Events - Level 2 Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1-4pm PDT (6 sessions) Extemporaneous Speaking & Current Events The ability to speak eloquently and persuasively with minimal preparation time is key to success in any format of debate, ranging from Congressional to Parliamentary, Public Forum to Lincoln Douglas. In this class, we will work together to learn about important current event issues around the world, as well as the historic events that led to serious issues facing our country and our planet. In addition, we will grow our spontaneous speaking skills and practice strategies for speech structure. Persuasive Writing
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1-4pm PDT (6 sessions) Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 1-4pm PDT (6 sessions) Persuasive Writing Vivid writing makes ideas real for the reader. Elegant writing sets itself apart. Humorous writing can make the reader laugh out loud. Forceful writing can change the world. In this course, we will discuss the components of effective persuasive writing, from grammar and organization, to argument construction and stylistic devices -- and strategies for adding humor! Students will emerge with a stronger grasp of the English language and how to use it to its fullest potential. |

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 9am-12pm PDT (6 sessions) Spontaneous Speech Being able to speak effectively off the top of your head is not only key in debate, it’s also a vital life skill, helping students express themselves effectively in interviews, advocate for themselves, and distinguish themselves in professional situations. It can also be extremely intimidating! But in this fun, high-energy class, students will learn there’s nothing to fear about spontaneous speaking! They will gain confidence in their abilities to speak and think on the fly as we play speech and impromptu games, practice spontaneous debate, and more. Persuasive Writing
